MONMOUTH, NJ — Survivors, advocates and lawmakers, including Rep. Andy Kim, will join in an event marking the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, the 5-year anniversaries of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, and the 1-year anniversary of Hurricane Ida.

At the event, participants will give a progress update on the recovery in their states impacted by worsening storms and extreme weather and release a new report.  The report is a roadmap detailing policy recommendations based on the struggles experienced by storm survivors across the country and with a clear mandate for action from Congress and the federal government.

The participants will discuss how the national disaster systems leave communities stranded during climate disasters and waiting too long for emergency resources to flow.

During the event, storm survivors will focus on improving distribution of relief funds to individuals and local governments, improving coordination following disasters, alleviating the burden that disaster survivors experience when engaging with insurance providers, and investing in advanced storm mitigation infrastructure.

WHO: Storm survivors from New Jersey, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Puerto Rico; advocates who have navigated climate disasters for years including from New Jersey Organizing Project, Housing NOLA, Taller Salud, Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico, Maria Fund, Florida Rising, Fair Share Housing Center, Texas Appleseed, Houston Organizing Movement for Equity, Power Coalition For Equity and Justice; and lawmakers

WHAT: Event marking the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy and 5-year anniversary of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria with an update on recovery efforts, and a new report with detailed policy recommendations on how to overhaul the broken disaster response system to meet the needs of our climate driven reality.

WHEN: Saturday, October 29, 2022, at NOON ET
